Mino city: A top washi producer with Udatsu townscape between Takayama and Kyoto

Mino city is located about 50km north of Nagoya. The city’s historic area was structured in 1606 and designated as one of government’s Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1999. The area is most well known for beautfiul Udatsu fire walls set on the roof top between houses.

In addition, the city has been producing “Mino Washi”, one of three major Japanese paper, for 1300 years. Mino Washi can be seen in various locations and settings: Mino Washi museum, Mino Washi Akari Art Gallery, Mino Akarikan Irodori (Interior Japanese paper lighting specialty store), and Mino Washi Akari Art Festival.

From Nagoya, driving a car TOKAI HOKURIKU Expressway is fastest (50 min) and convenient. Gifu Bus company directly connects Mino-city with Nagoya in 80 min but the closest bus stops are still 3 km away.

The same bus company connects Gifu (on JR Tokai line) and Mino city in 70 min and this route has a convenient bus stop (Mino city hall), just 4 min walk away to an edge of the historic district.

If you have time, using Nagaragawa Railway (timetable) connecting the city with Mino-Ohta station (on JR Takayama line connecting Nagoya and Takayama) might be an option.  The company is running the sightseeing train service. The closest is Mino-shi station which is about 8 min walk away from the closest edge of the historic district.
